Week 16~ Happy Easter!

Hey Everyone!

So this week has been fun.  Sorry about the change up of P day.  This town shuts down for Easter.  All these Catholics just take the week off basically.  So nothing was open yesterday.  It is so crazy!!  All I saw was people going to church!  This Easter holiday leads into my first story this week.

So Happy Easter in Croatian is Sretan Uskurs.  So in an effort to be more friendly I started just saying this as passing to people and they would respond.  This is unusual because people usually just keep walking but when you throw a greeting like that in there shoot all the sudden everyone wants to talk to you.  Can't wait for the next holiday so people will be nice lol.  So we were tracting and just doing our thing you know.  Well a door had a sign on it that said Happy Easter.  I thought to myself well this person may be nice.  So turns out she wasn't very nice.  She opens the door and i introduced myself, which turned into a very short exchange as she said no thank you and closed the door.  This was not a very nice lady.  So through the door I gave her a little ˝Sretan Uskurs˝.  Well this must have struck a note with her because she opened the door and said, ˝And to you too˝.  While it wasn't very happy she still opened the door back up and it made me feel better.  It must have made her feel a little guilty, and as it should.  She was not very nice.  So that was fun.

Dad you asked if we have had any service opportunities.  Well funny you asked!  When I first got here i wanted to do service really bad.  Walking around all day was getting a little old and so i was just looking to mix it up.  I saw a lady racking leaves one day and so i asked warren if he would ask her if we could help.  he did and it turns our she works at this place and that is her job.  well that went over well.  then another time we saw an older man throwing wood over a fence and so this time i asked if we could help and he said well now you show up im almost done.  well shoot we are 0 for 2 and its almost the bottom of the transfer.  so as you can imagine i was excited when my zone leaders told me that all the missionaries were invited over to a members house where we would be doing some service and then have lunch.  well when we got there we were able to take out a fence for him and move around some wood.  what he didn't know is that here was 10 missionaries that he now had to feed.  turns out that this was a miscommunication and he was expecting only 4.  so we went to the store and got some more čavapi, which is like a sausage almost.  it is really good.  we all had a good laugh and a good time.  so that is my one service opportunity so far.

So we have not tracted into any other nonactive member.  however, instead they have come to us!  we were walking the other day and some guy says hello elders.  this is in english and im all for speakin english.  so we stop and start talking to him.  turns out he is an inactive member who served in this mission when it was the Austrian south mission.  However, he is now with his ˝partner˝ here just as a tourist.  He is now openly gay...... all i have to say is ˝to je to˝ which is something Croatians say all the time when you are finished talking which just means ˝that is it˝ or literally translated ˝that is that˝.

So we have finally moved into our new apartment and i am hesitant to completely unpack everything because this is transfer and i may be going somewhere else.  so this place is all redone.  so everything is all brand new.  but it is so empty.  i came from a fully furnished apartment to this place which just has a few drawers, two beds, a closet, and a table.  So we are in the process of getting some things like dishes, and all the necessities.  I said it could use maybe a couple rugs, some curtains, and maybe some things to hang on the wall.  I was abruptly informed by lovely elder warren that those are not things that missionaries NEED.  just the bare necessities for us.  I dont know what to do with myself the place is like a box, so empty, so sad.  Warren says to get over it and i say to shut it.

So i thought that i would able to get a break from allergies for two years... that was a joke.  Allergies are in full swing and i am dying.  Apparently warren knew right what to do so he had been giving me what i later found out to be benadryl.  So i was tired all day long cause every few hours he would give me that and i thought i was just tired because my body was fighting the allergies.  So when i call sister hill, the mission pres wife, to see if there is anything i can do she asked what i have been taking and i turn to warren and ask him, he says oh just benadryl and sudafed.  Instantly both of us, Sister Hill and I, are like what the heck.  why benadryl??  So i went to the pharmacy and they have Allegra here so that has been working.  my companion, bless his soul, he means well.

Other than what I have said i am doing really good.  the allergies have made it hard to focus and be very motivated but i am doing well.  Transfer is this week like I said and English class is over so we are just wrapping things up! I love you all and hope you had a Happy Easter.

Week 15~ Kickin' It Croation Style

Hey Fam,

So this week really has been just so much fun! We have had lots of fun and that is because we have been working hard, or hardly working, I can't remember... So you all know what time it is... STORY TIME.  Yup I got some real cool ones!

So first story comes from my favorite finding activity... tracting.  So Warren and I are moving soon so we decided to start doing some finding in the area where we will be moving.  So ride the tram down there and just pick a building and start tracting.  So we have gone threw a couple floors of this apartment building.  Oh ya I don't know if I said this before but there are basically all apartment buildings here and they are so ugly because they are from the communist years.  So we come to this one guy door and I start my memorized approach like a champ and them he actually wants to talk to us so Warren has to take over and we basically teach him on the door step and tell him to pray and just give it a try, because he is Atheist.  So he laughs at us and we leave.  I did ask him if he knew anyone around who would be interested and he said idk but not the next door over because he is a Hindu.  So we get to that door and I didn't even think we were going to knock, but Warren said to, so I did.  He INSTANTLY let us in.  I was so confused.  I had heard him looking out his peep hole and scuffling around inside while we were talking to the other guy but I thought he wouldn't even answer.  Oh ya everyone looks out their peep hole before they answer.... weirdy's...  So we go in and we start talking to him and we are just trying to figure this guy out and he just is like oh ok well I am Mormon.  Then Im like ok who is this character thinking that we are some, all you have to do is believe in church.  So I ask him when he was baptized and he spits out an exact date... shoot this guy is legit! He goes and gets his Book of Mormon and shows it to us.  It was one of the old versions when the church had not yet come out with one and one of the first members had translated it.  So this guy starts talking with us and I found out he is endowed and everything.  Ok this is like a miracle because you hardly ever find inactive's, especially in Zagreb because it is so big.  He told us that just the day before he was thinking about the church and how he needed to come back, then we show up.  Oh you know dat's right.  We be doing work like it's nobodies buziness.  I was so excited and I bore my very best testimony, which isn't really that great, that the Lord wants to bless him but can't until he keeps the commandments.  I say this as he is lightin up a smoke.  So that was super cool.  He is working on Sunday's till next month then he said to call him and he would love to meet.  So ya.  NEXT

Family let me tell you the power of prayer is real and works everyday.  This is one of the coolest experiences I have had on my mission yet and I want to share it with you.  So we are teaching this guy right now and he is having a hard time keeping his commitments so we can't really move forward with him until he does that.  So we don't really know what to teach him and so I suggest during our comp study that we pray about what to teach him because the Lord is the only one that knows what he needs right now.  So we get down and I offer a prayer and tell the Lord that we need his help and that we have planned something already but it doesn't feel right so please help us to know what to teach.  So after the prayer is over we both just stay on our knees and are pondering for awhile.  Right after the prayer I feel that the plan of salvation is what he needs.  I try to think of other options just so I know that it's not just me coming up with it and my thought just always reverted back to plan of salvation.  So I don't want to say that because I didn't Warren to say something else then me feel dumb.  So then Warren says I think we should teach the plan of salvation.  I was so shocked I didn't think it would be that easy to see.  It was clear as day to me but I didn't know if Warren was thinking that too.  So I told him that I was thinking the same thing and we prepared from there.  It was the most amazing thing.  I love prayer so much especially as I get to teach it to these people who have been saying memorized prayers for so long.  For them to hear that they can pray with their own words is so awesome.  Unfortunately we didn't have time to teach him all of it but we will be meeting with him again!

So I got to witness an amazing thing this week.... Little League Baseball in Croatia!! I was watching from the sidewalk and taking pics and everything.  I was cheering and yelling like I knew someone that was playing lol.  It was so fun to see that again!

So I know that you all are super busy but if you get a few moments just google the name Krešimir Čosić.  This man used to play basketball at BYU and he is the very reason that missionaries and the church are in Croatia right now.  He has done more for the church in this country than anyone.  The old church that they used to meet in here is a whole floor of an apartment building that he bought for the church.  The girl from BYU did a documentary on him and I think it is on YouTube.  But ya just read a little about him.  When I say that the first member translated the Book of Mormon so that they could have it in Croatia I am talking about him. We still don't a church translation of the Book of Mormon, but we use a translation that was done by someone else and the church authorized.  They are currently working on the triple combination but ya.  So this guy is amazing.  I just wanted to share that with ya'll.

It's April and I thought I would be allergy free for two years but that is not the case... I have been miserable these past few days.  I have been taking benadryl but ya it sucks.  Now people think the missionaries are allowed to do weed cause my eyes are always red lol ok they don't really think that but they might idk...

We have had a good week and we are just chugging along.  Transfer is coming up and I think I will be staying with Warren.......... ya that's my thoughts on that.....

I can not tell you how thankful I am for all of your thoughts and prayers.  I fell your love everyday and I am so thankful to be apart of the best family in the world.  I have so many people supporting me and I love you all so much.  I miss and love you all!

Week 14

My Dearest Family,

So Croatia is going really good.  We are just working hard and doing our missionary thing.  We have been teaching about 9 lessons each week which is a lot for this mission.  We also went on exchanges with the zone leaders so that was fun.  Which leads to the first story of the week.

So I am with the zone leader that has the car so I am just living that up.  I actually get to sit in a car when we go somewhere and not just stand on a tram.  So we had a lesson with a member which was kind of far out of the city.  So we get there and every time I see this guy I think of Dustin Hoffman.  He looks just like him.  It's funny that I say that because every time he sees me he tells me that I look like another missionary.  So we go to his house and teach him and it's all good.  Well then we decided to go to this huge park that is kind of far away from their apartment, but don't worry we have a car.  So we go there and it is the biggest park in Croatia so I am just playing kind of tourist and taking some pictures and feeling terrible about contacting people.  So I decide I will contact the next person I see.  I was totally unprepared and had not idea of what I was going to say.  So I walk up to this guy and say, ˝Ja sam iz misionari˝.  Well just figure that means ˝I am from the missionaries˝.  Then I get flustered and don't know what to say.  He tells me he is catholic and I say well great.  Then I say I am a missionary AGAIN.  Then right after that I say ˝Ja sam....˝ which means I am, and the guy finishes my sentence, ˝misionari˝ and walks away.  I felt so stupid but right when we got back in the car Elder Nitta and I just started busting up.  I sounded like a complete idiot and we were able to have a good laugh.

Then on the way home from that park the car started doing funny things.  Just my freaking luck right, because I am so good with cars!  So we got to the church ok but it is now dead because of some tube or another.  I took a look at it and didn't seen anything wrong I don't know what all the fuss is about lol.

So I have no had very good luck with my laundry this week.  I went on that exchange which means that while I was sleeping in someones else's nasty bed they got to dirty my nice clean bed!  So when I got home I put my sheets in the wash and when they were done, because it has been nice here, I hung them out on the clothes line so they would dry faster.  Well that was all fine and dandy.  After that I washed my white shirts and hung them out so that I could iron them that night and have it all taken care of for awhile.  Well when I came home that night I went to get my shirts from outside and ya you guessed it.  The devil pigeons freaking pooped on them!  Two of them just got destroyed and I was pisses!  So instantly I put them back in the wash so that it would be taken care of asap.  Well Warren told me he had some shirts to wash too and that he would start it.  Oh he started it alright, WITH A BLACK SOCK IN THE WASHER!!  So when I pull my shirts out to dry AGAIN they are dark gray!  So I am now in the process of bleaching them and if they don't look better it is coming out of Warrens hide!  So ya that's that story or as the Croats say it, to je to, meaning that is that, or that is all.

Elder Warren and I had the opportunity to got to some members house for dinner the other night and that was fun.  Apparently then already like me because the other Elders told me that they didn't get a dinner appointment till they had been our for like a year.  So that was fun.  The dad used to be District President here and he is really cool.  They have the two cutest daughters, Vita and Hana (Hannah).  They kept trying to sit on my lap but I had to tell them no, I was so sad.  I miss my little brothers and sisters and now I can't play with little kids.  So I ate a late lunch that day, bad idea.  The wife, Lydia, made lasagna, and it was amazing.  However, I wasn't able to finish my serving because she gave me like half the dish, SHOOT!  But they understood and love me so it's all good.  I brought them life savers because they can't get them here so I thought it would be fun and the mom said they taste like root beer.  Root Beer! I know my root beer and life savers are nothing close to it. She is a professional family historian and is going to Germany for a conference the end of the month and told me she would buy me some Euro root beer there because you can't get it in Croatia.

Also I forgot to tell you all I met the guy who is playing Christ in the new Book of Mormon video but I am not supposed to know what.  It was weird to see a guy with long hair and a full beard at church.  That was pretty neat.

So the work is going great we are working on some reactivating right now.  I love helping them remember the happiness they had when they were baptized and letting them know how they can find that again.  So sometimes you don't get to see the results right away but that makes it so much sweeter when you do.  I am not so depressed about the language.  I just ask millions of questions a day.  Just because I am not depressed doesn't mean I still don't get frustrated like everyday! But all the members tell me, bit če bolje, which means that, it will be better.  So life is good and dandy.  I love you all and can't wait to talk to ya'll in May.

Love, Elder Massey

Week 13~ Email Titled "Pa Super"

So there is your Croatian for the week.  They like to put ˝pa˝ in front of expressions.  It just means ˝duh˝.  So you ask someone how they are and they will sometimes say Pa Super!  Yes that is all the Croatian I have learned thus far... jk. But this week has been really good. It is starting to speed up and I don't know if I like that. For now I do yes but i know that will change.
So this week has also been pretty fun. I feel like there is a sort of pressure to come up with some good stories for you all because you always say you cant wait for the stories of the week. That is good for now because there is always something to share. Elder Warren thinks I'm weird because I always pull out my planner so that I won't forget something. So wait you have all been waiting for shoot....
So everyone here parks on the sidewalk. I don't remember if i told ya'll but the first week here someone would come up on the side walk while i was walking by and i would kind of jump back i mean shoot i don't want to get all tow up. Also you can just park your car in the middle of the street, under one condition, all you have to do is leave your flashers on! It is so funny. And people love to honk at absolutely everything here. It is kind of annoying. So when people park on the side walk they always bend in there mirrors so that they don't get torn off. The tram is driving by and it is so freaking close it scares me everytime! And on the other side where people walk they bend them in so people don't knock them off walking by. Well that didn't work out so well for me at least. Elder Warren and I were walking to meet a guy at some little cafe and I saw that some people had forgotten to bend their mirror in so I dared Warren to bend it in. He did it then continued to do it to the next couple cars. So I thought I would just test it out with my arm, you know not to much force just see if it would go easily. Well apparently it would go really easy. So easy in fact that it would fall off if you just bumped it with your arm. Ya you got it, I knocked someones mirror off.... I didn't know what to do. So like all good missionaries I got down next to it and took a good picture and kept walking. I mean what else was I supposed to do. It was a crappy car anyway. So that was basically the funnies thing that happened this week. Yes it is a little sad but those are the kinds of things that keep me going somedays lol.
So we got to watch General Conference through the wonderful technology of the internet. We have watched the first three sessions so far. We just go to the church and project it up on the wall in the chapel through a laptop. It gets a little choppy sometimes but I'm so glad we have the opportunity to watch it, and it's in English! We will be watching the the last session for Sunday school the next two weeks and the same thing for the priesthood session. I didn't have a headache after church this week so that was good. Watching conference as a missionary is so much different. First of all we are at the church trying to be good examples for the members and taking notes. Second you get to listen to church in English, and another thing is that you get to hear from the prophets you testify of everyday. When I was at home I felt that being in Utah I was close to them. Also I could get on the computer whenever and research a certain topic or read something if I wanted. I don't have that leisure anymore so it was awesome to be able to hear all the messages. I can't wait till I can get my hands on an Ensign and reread everything. I really enjoyed conference and went as we all should prepared with questions that I was seeking answers for. I heard those answers and I paid close attention and took notes. I tried to not take to many notes for fear of missing something while I was writing. I know that I will be able to read it all again so I was just soaking it all in this time. I hope that you all enjoyed it as much as I did. I am so thankful for the technology that has made it possible for me to hear the words of a prophet.
So yesterday was the first time I had fasted during conference. We had a district fast so that's why, but when it was time to break our fast we all did it together at the church and had kind of a potluck thing. It was really fun. So I was kind of in a mood all day from being hungry and what not. It got a bit better when I ate. I loved listening to conference in English but after we were back in Croatian mood and that never goes to well for me. So I was cleaning up the kitchen and as Warren took out the trash I noticed that there was something in the bottom of the trash can. So there was a member standing there and as I grabbed a rag to wipe it out she freaked out on me, in Croatian of course. And I was like what the heck are you saying. She took the rag from me and said, No use this. Um ok... so I went and got paper towels and she said that was to small. Ok what the heck lady.... Then she looks at me and says, ˝Didn't your mom teach you anything?˝ Oh heck to the no you did not just talk about my momma teaching me how to clean like that! I was so mad. I must have been more on edge than I thought but she was making me so angry. I told her my mom had taught me perfectly and that's why I was trying to clean up. She then proceeded to tell me that while I was there that she was my mom. What the heck lady get up off my momma! So I lost it, I said if your mom then why don't you make me food, clean my clothes, and iron my shirts. Now that all sounds a lot worse than I said it. I didn't have my nasty tone that you all know and love. But she was dissing on my momma and that does not work for me. I already miss my mom like it's not even funny and she tries to tell me she is my mom for the next to years. Ya freaking right. (P.S. Mom I love you in case you didn't know.) So in conclusion of this story I would like to say how much I love and appreciate all the lovely members here in Zagreb.
Well that is about all for this week. I am doing great. We are working our butts off. We are contacting like crazy which I am getting better at. Practice looking like an idiot, who would have thought I would be doing that! I got my visa too! So the long days at the dysfunctional government building are over for now. Today was also day number 3 for gelado and I think I am in love. So creamy, smooth and sweet. Lance are you drooling yet??
I love you all and hope your conference was great! Have a great week!!
